Taut

The development of Taut was in response to the “Design with Light 2010” competition sponsored by Lightology in Chicago, USA.  The design challenge was to develop a new application for Soft Strip, a linear LED tape light manufactured by Edge Lighting.  Conceptually, Taut builds off of the intrinsic characteristics of this product – compact size and a flexible body that is delivered coiled on a spool – and introduces a new product typology that provides indirect interior illumination.  Taut traverses interior space through tension mounting between two points located on perpendicular or parallel surfaces (wall to wall, wall to ceiling, ceiling to floor, wall to floor).  This unique mounting platform combined with the products delicate scale allows for unprecedented compositional opportunities that deviate from conventional linear lighting products.  Traditional parallel rows evenly spaced throughout an environment can be retained or substituted for more dynamic, volumetric patterns that are more akin to spatial drawing.  Thus, conventional assumptions with a luminaire’s aesthetic identity and practical role within interior design are brought into question.

This product is currently being produced by PureEdge Lighting under the name Soft Line and Lazer Line.
