MUSEUM OF ART - LIMA, PERU

Derek Porter Studio collaborated with Bernheimer Architecture on an international design competition in Lima Peru – a new Contemporary Art wing for the Museum of Art (MALI). This addition is primarily subterranean and conceived as a social connection between park, museum and city in addition to satisfying institutional programming interests. Building massing is reductive; playing on solid and void dichotomies that anchor the site, define new entry and support passive ventilation as well as disbursement of natural light to underground spaces. Careful consideration was given to natural phenomena intrinsic to this geographic region – air, light, moisture – and time based transitions that would leave lasting impressions on the museum goers sensorial experience.
